Troubleshooting Windows Server Hourly Shutdowns

If your Windows Server VPS starts shutting down automatically and repeatedly, often exactly one hour after startup, it is a strong indication that the Windows operating system license has expired or is not activated.

Windows Server operating systems, when unactivated or after a license expires, enter a 'grace period' or 'non-genuine' state. In this state, the system may enforce automatic shutdowns as a protective measure to prompt activation.

Common Symptoms:

• Your VPS shuts down precisely one hour after it is started.
• You might see messages about Windows not being activated or the license expiring.
• System information or Control Panel indicates an unactivated Windows status.

Solutions:

To resolve the hourly shutdowns, you need to address the Windows license issue:

1. Activate Windows with a Valid License Key: The most direct solution is to purchase and apply a legitimate Windows Server license key. Once activated, the hourly shutdowns will cease.
2. Reinstall Windows (Optional): If you do not have a license key or wish to start with a fresh installation, reinstalling the Windows Server operating system on your VPS is an option. However, this will not activate the license unless you have a key to enter during or after the installation. You can choose from our provided Windows Server templates or use the Bring Your Own Image (BYOI) feature to install a custom Windows ISO.
3. Alternative Operating System: If Windows Server licensing is problematic or costly, consider switching to a Linux-based operating system for your VPS, especially if your applications are compatible. Linux distributions are generally free to use and do not require licensing fees.
